Living Comfortably Through Home Renovation — Benson Homes

Today we’re here to share some of the renovation wisdom we’ve picked up along the way as we share the “secret sauce” to not just surviving but thriving during your home's remodeling journey.

Have you finally decided to embark on the home renovation you’ve been dreaming up for so long? Moving forward with renovation plans can be such an exciting time, but can also bring some stress along with it as you face the inevitable “controlled chaos” that construction brings into your home - especially if you’re planning on still living in it during your renovation. In fact, many of our clients cite the inevitable discomfort of construction as one of the main reasons they put off their dream renovations before finally committing.

Thankfully, we have a lot of experience in that arena. At Benson Homes, we're not just about construction; we're about helping your family have a peaceful experience, even amidst the whirlwind of renovation. With over three decades spent honing our craft, we've mastered the art of blending comfort with chaos for homeowners in the midst of renovation, and have a few tricks up our sleeves to make the process go smoother for all involved. Today we’re here to share some of the renovation wisdom we’ve picked up along the way as we share the “secret sauce” to not just surviving but thriving during your home's remodeling journey.

1. Anticipate and Prepare for the Construction Phase

Before the hammer meets the nail, it’s important to take a step back and strategize. Our initial consultation isn't just about blueprints and budgets; it's about preparing you and your household for the adventure ahead. Expectations set? Check. Game plan in motion? Double-check. We have found that setting expectations upfront helps to minimize surprises and ensures that everyone is on the same page before construction begins. During our initial consultation with clients, we create a game plan so we can turn your vision into reality with as few disruptions to your life's rhythm as possible.

2. Create a Comfortable Living Environment Amidst the “Storm”

Hoping that somehow you will still have a peaceful retreat amidst the construction chaos? We've got you covered. We make living through a renovation more manageable for our clients by creating as comfortable a living environment as possible during the construction phase. A few tried and true things we do to achieve this are:

  • Sectioning off rooms with magnetic doors to minimize dust and noise.

  • Setting up a temporary kitchenette so that you can still prepare meals.

  • Creating designated entrances and walkways for our workers to provide you with privacy and minimize disruptions to your daily routine.

No renovation is going to be completely disruption-free, but we do our best to protect your peace and keep your household running despite the construction.

We set up a temporary hot water heater and kitchenette for our client during her kitchen renovation.

3. Prioritize Effective Communication and Coordination

Communication isn't just a buzzword; it's our lifeline during every renovation project. We always assign a dedicated project manager to oversee your project from start to finish. Your project manager isn't just a title; they are your bridge to clarity and peace of mind during your renovation. You can expect regular updates, a listening ear, and solutions tailored to your evolving needs. Our primary goal is to keep you informed and involved in the process every step of the way.

4. Maintain Safety and Security At All Times

Safety isn't negotiable; it's our top priority on any construction site. During your renovation, our team implements various safety measures to protect you, your home, and your family, including:

  • Ensuring that construction areas are properly secured to prevent accidents.

  • Minimizing hazards such as exposed wiring or sharp objects.

  • Securing the property and your belongings to prevent theft or damage.

5. Remain Flexible and Adaptable

Life can be unpredictable, and home renovations are no exception!  While we do our best to stick to the timeline, we understand that unexpected challenges can arise during any renovation. Our team has learned to embrace the unexpected as we pivot, adapt, and conquer hurdles together. Our commitment? Turning setbacks into stepping stones, ensuring your dream home remains within reach, no matter the detours. If changes need to be made to the plan, we'll work with you in real time to find solutions that meet your needs and budget.

2023 Home Remodeling Surge Explained — Benson Homes

The overwhelming majority of homeowners have decided to keep moving forward with their plans to remodel their bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, exterior areas, and more this year. Learn why in this article.

During times of economic and supply chain uncertainty, many homeowners may wonder if it’s the right time to jump into a remodeling project, or if it’s safer to “press pause” for a bit. But according to a late 2022 survey released by Houzz, the overwhelming majority of homeowners have actually decided to keep moving forward with their plans to remodel their bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, exterior areas and more this year. If anything, they are more eager than ever to keep the ball rolling on the changes they have planned for their homes. In fact, only 1% of homeowners canceled their remodeling plans…and nearly a quarter of homeowners plan to start their home improvement projects in the next 12 months. We’ve seen the same trends among our own local clients, and decided it was worth exploring.

So, what are the factors that are pushing so many homeowners to commit to their remodeling projects this year?

  1. Home availability is dropping but interest rates remain elevated.

The cost of moving to a new home is often much steeper than improving a current home. Mortgage rates hit a peak last year, but they are continuing to trend upwards this year. While the market remains volatile and is still uncertain, more homeowners seem to be making the conscious decision to settle in and apply their finances towards improving their current homes, rather than looking elsewhere or building from scratch.

  2. Remodeling can be a better investment than buying.

Not only can the costs associated with buying a new home be astronomical these days, but the National Association of Realtors says that housing inventory is expected to remain tight in 2023. A large portion of homeowners (67% according to Houzz) are choosing to stay put in their current homes and strategically invest in remodeling projects that will raise their home’s value. This decision, coupled with the housing inventory shortage, can lead to a much higher ROI. So homeowners reap the benefits of living in a newly remodeled home in the short term, while knowing that the funds and time they invested into creating a better home will pay off in the long run, if they ever decide to sell.

  3. Homeowners are ready to create their dream spaces.

The last several years have been tumultuous and full of ups and downs. Homeowners, after spending more time than ever within their own 4 walls, are ready to take their current spaces and fully enjoy them. They don’t want to keep putting off creating their dream homes any longer.

One top challenge the survey uncovered is that a startling 35% of homeowners are struggling to find the right professionals for their remodeling needs. With ongoing supply chain and labor shortages, homeowners beginning the remodeling process should proceed with caution. It is crucial that homeowners ensure that they are working with someone that is experienced and brings lots of knowledge, contacts and expertise to the table in order to help navigate shifting timelines and materials issues. It can be daunting to find the right company for custom remodeling and design, but investing in a home remodel isn’t likely to pay off unless it can be executed with quality design, craftsmanship and materials that will stand the test of time.

If you’re struggling to find the right remodeling partner, or have questions about the scope of what it will take to make your home dreams a reality, schedule a complimentary consultation with Benson Homes by connecting with us here

5 Simple Ways to Add Value to Your Home

Your home is likely your biggest financial asset – here’s how to add to its value in a wild housing market.

It’s no secret that your home is a major investment.

And if you’re a homeowner, it follows that your residence is also one of your largest assets. But, often, when it comes to using or truly enjoying the space they’re in, many homeowners put off improvements until they’re ready to move out.

The good news is, you don’t have to reserve improvements for when you’re thinking about selling your home. There are a few simple updates you can do to make sure your home retains – and even adds to – your investment. Here’s how:

1.     Think of Your Space in a New Way

It’s time to get creative with the space you have. Have you always dreamed of creating an in-home art studio? Do you wish your workout gear had a dedicated space? It may be time to think differently about the same four walls you’ve lived in.

In our line of work, we’ve updated closets into art studios and home gyms, and we’ve even added an addition to the second story of a home. If you can look at your space with fresh eyes, and know its potential is virtually limitless, you’re on track to having a home that serves you and your needs to the best of its ability.

2.     Make Minor Changes with the Broadest Impact

Renovation doesn’t always have to include demolition or a major overhaul of rooms. Sometimes, minor or subtle changes to your space can have a big, immediate impact on how your home serves you.

Adding USB ports in your outlets, installing lights beneath cabinetry, or simple swaps like updating countertops and light fixtures can breathe new life into a space that feels stale or a little outdated.

3.     Updates for the Modern Homeowners

We’ve seen the modern homeowner forego traditional spaces like formal dining rooms in favor of entertainment, in-home gyms, or additional office spaces. Just because a room of your home was once designated for dining or even storage, it doesn’t mean it has to hold onto that identity.

Let go of tradition, and let the rooms transform into a space representing you and your life.

4.     Restore the Classics

On the other hand, classics are a classic for a reason. Choosing to restore old flooring and hardware to their former glory can give your home a timeless vibe while embracing its modern twists.

5.     Make an Appeal to Your Curb Appeal

Finally, improving the flow of your home and how it serves your needs can actually begin in the great outdoors. Consider adding a pool, patio, or at-home spa as a way to create both more value and more functionality in your area. You can check out some of our outdoor projects here.

Are you ready to add value and enjoy the functionality and flow of the home you live in now? Give us a call at 757.689.3465 or send an email to info@bensonhomes.com to get started!

5 Key Credentials for Choosing the Right Builder — Benson Homes

Remodeling Your Home in Virginia Beach? Here Are 5 Credentials to Look Out for When Searching For the Right Builder

Loving the idea of a home remodel?

It’s an exciting time – and sometimes a daunting one. Sure, popular HGTV shows demolish, polish and give homes a significant “glow up” in a matter of minutes. But those who’ve encountered even the most basic home remodeling projects know there’s far more to the industry than DIY projects, shiplap and granite countertops.

Home building and remodeling requires an extensive process of creative planning, design, and a high-level of expertise on safe practices, business, energy efficiency, and more.

How a remodeler assesses the state of your current home, their skills in project management and finances can make or break your remodel (and your subsequent budget).

Here are a few designations to look out for when searching for a top-tier builder in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Graduate Master Builder

The Graduate Master Builder (GMB) is a designation given to builders who complete a series of courses where they must display not only an advanced knowledge of the building process, but advanced skills in risk management, financial management, and project management.

Builders are only eligible for this designation after possessing a Certified Graduate Builders (CGB) or Certified Graduate Remodeler (CGR) designation with five years of building experience or complete the CCB or CGR-approved courses with 10 years of building experience.

Certified Graduate Remodeler

This designation emphasizes a remodeler’s professionalism, and trains them up in important business skillsets like accounting, contract law and job cost procedures. Remodelers with this designation must have at least five years’ experience before applying for their CGR.

Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist

The Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) designation is reserved for professional remodelers who have undergone extensive training in providing home modifications for those who wish to remain in their homes as they age.

CAPS-certified remodelers are trained in identifying adjustments for homeowners as they age to make their homes more accessible, like the installation of ramps, medical alert systems, and stair lifts.

Certified Green Professional

This designation is reserved for builders who emphasize sustainable building methods into homes that improve energy flow, water efficiency and other “green” efficiencies. Remodelers with this designation are trained to both save costs and promote environmentally friendly and sustainable building practices

EPA Lead-Safe Certification

This certification is a requirement for those who come into contact with or alter surfaces that were painted prior to the year 1978. This training helps remodelers know how to properly prevent the exposure of lead dust or other harmful hazards on a job site; keeping both their team and their clients safe from harm.

It’s worth the time and effort to make sure the team you decide to work with in your next remodeling project has both the creative flourish, the professionalism, and the safety wherewithal to complete the task at hand.

Is Your Bathroom Your Oasis?

It’s possible to achieve spa-quality pampering from your own home. Here’s how!

It’s possible to achieve spa-quality pampering from your own home. Here’s how!

Using your bathroom is more than a part of your daily routine. It’s an act of self-care. After all, it’s really only there that you’ll find a few moments a day where you can relax and find some true alone time.

But what if your bathroom could serve as more than just a place to get ready for the day – what if it was a place that could become a true escape, with spa-like features that make you feel relaxed and rejuvenated each time you entered the room?

In this day and age, homeowners are opting for luxurious, yet simple, bathroom features to give themselves a relaxing respite in their own corner of the world.

Here are five major trends we’ve seen in our latest Benson Homes bathroom remodels to consider for your home:

1.     For the Shower

First and foremost, homeowners are indulging in some special extras for the shower. They can opt for shower heads that come complete with natural scented oils to enhance their relaxation and indulge in a little aromatherapy while they clean. Additionally, open concepts for showers are on the rise.

2.     Backlit mirrors and medicine cabinets

To add a touch of glam to your daily routine, consider optimum, LED backlighting for your mirrors and cabinets. Not only does it add a sense of calming ambience to the room, it’s also quite practical for makeup application, shaving and hair styling.

3.     Space-conscious soaking tubs

It’s time to celebrate the tiny tub. More and more, homeowners are getting rid of bulky jacuzzi bathtubs, which are classically difficult to clean and take up a huge amount of real estate in the bathroom. Smaller soaking tubs paired with a separate shower make for both optimum tranquility as well as functionality.

4.     Adding a touch of nature

Incorporating materials such as hardwoods, stone, bamboo, plant life and other natural occurring elements to your bathroom remodel can add a splash of Zen to any space. Keeping up with the trend, homeowners are opting for countertops made of quartz to tie the look and feel of the room together.

5.     Smart fixtures

The simplest changes to beautify or enhance the quality of your bathroom can stem from updates to your fixtures. Smart toilets, heated flooring, digital faucets, and even shower heads with Bluetooth connections can add a touch of luxury without major renovation overhauls.

Even the smallest changes or updates to your home bathroom can make the biggest impact when it comes to having a secluded and private place to relax.

Are you ready to practice self-care from the comfort of your own home? Give us a call at 757.689.3465 or send us an email at info@bensonhomes.com!

Spring is the Air – Is Your Home Prepared?

Here are five must-dos to make your house ready for the season ahead!

As the seasons change and we get a little relief from the subsiding chill in the air, it’s time to evaluate the state of your home – both inside and out – to keep one of your most important assets in tip-top shape.

Here are five items on your home improvement checklist to mark off so you’ll be ready for the warmer months ahead:

benson homes+spring cleaning

Work on Your Curb Appeal

As you prep for the upcoming spring weather, it’s time to trim those hedges and prune back the trees that may have overgrown in the last few months. As the weather gets warmer, you’ll have a jump start on your gardening projects, and you’ll love the fresh look your home has as a whole from the outside.

A little elbow grease with some pruning shears and, if you need them, a sturdy pair of loppers, can make a big difference on the outside of your home.

Clean Your Gutters

Wet leaves that clump together and remain damp can cause serious issues when it comes to your rooftop’s drainage. If you’re able to DIY, grab a ladder, and remove all leaves, twigs and other debris that may have clogged your gutters over the fall and winter months. If not, gutter cleaning services typically list in the low two-hundred-dollar range for average-sized homes.

Power Wash Your Home

Experts recommend power washing your home twice a year, once as the winter months settle in, and again as spring begins to make its appearance. So, as we head into March, now is the perfect time to rid your home’s exterior of dirt buildup, especially if you live in an area that experiences frequent snow or rain.

This will preserve the integrity and the beauty of the outside of your home, and prevent damage or decay of your property over time.

Give Your Windows a Good Cleaning

The start of spring is a great time to let the sun into your home; which means it’s likely time to wipe down the interior and exterior windows. Rain or snow runoff can cause grime to accumulate, and of course, windows can get just as dirty on the interior, too.

You’ll be amazed at the difference having windows free of dust and smudges can make in the cleanliness of your home.

Time to De-Clutter

After so many of us have hunkered down in the last few months, it might be time to evaluate the extra paper, boxes, shoes, children’s toys, clothing items, kitchenware and more that give your home a sense of disarray – even if it’s clean.

A good rule of thumb? Keep a few boxes by your front door. Each time you come across an item that you’d like to toss, donate, or give to a friend, place them in a box. Over time, the rooms in your house will become less cluttered, and you’ll already have your items organized for their next location out of your home.

Is your home in need of a bigger facelift? Learn more about Benson Home custom remodeling services today!

Deck the Halls: Home Holiday Decorating Tips — Benson Homes

Oh, there’s no place like home for the holidays.

And in the year 2020, the song lyrics of that popular jingle have never been more relatable or accurate.

But even though there are fewer parties for hosting, and the hustle and bustle of the typical holiday season has slowed to a simmer, there are still ways to be festive from the comfort of your own home.

Here are a few tips on how to keep your home spruced up while you’re staying in this holiday season.

Trim Greenery from Your Yard

Though the candle industry has tried, nothing quite captures the true essence of the holiday season like fresh greenery. If you have access to pine, or any type of evergreen leaves, clip a few trimmings to add to your holiday floral arrangements. Bonus points for creating homemade garlands or wreaths.

Just be sure to soak any trimmings you use in your home for 12 hours to increase their longevity, and give them a mist with a spray bottle every few days to keep them fresh.

Make Your Own Pot Potpourri on Your Stovetop

Creating your own holiday essence is as easy as bringing a few cups of water to a slow boil on your stovetop. Add in sliced apples, oranges, cinnamon, star anise and even a handful of cranberries; keep on low heat for up to six hours. Your house will smell festive and incredible.

Dust Off the Décor You Haven’t Seen in a While

Many of us have the decorations that take a little bit more effort. We tell ourselves “we’ll get to them,” but each year the swell of the holiday busyness takes over.

This year, make a point to take inventory of what decorations and ornaments mean the most to you. If there are others that you enjoy, but can’t seem to keep up with, consider passing them on to a family member or donating them to a local charity.

33BDD8D9-D177-4ABA-BB71-A0D436290A8A.JPG

Make a Space to Honor Memories from the Past

While you’re home, make yourself a cup of steaming hot chocolate and pull out the old photographs and video clips from days of Christmas past. You’ll enjoy reliving special Christmas memories as you organize and date the material.

Creating photo albums and reels for your loved ones is a spectacular way to feel connected with those who feel further away this year.

Dive into a Traditional Recipe

Have a family recipe that’s time or labor intensive that you don’t quite get around to each season? This may be just the year to explore that.

If you don’t have a recipe that beckons to you with Christmas cheer, try your hands at mastering a new one from your favorite holiday themed baking show.

Who knows? You may stumble upon a new favorite that you and your family can’t get enough of for years to come.

Keep the Thrill of Hope Alive in Your Heart

Though the holiday season may look extraordinarily different for so many of us this year, we hope you continue to have a meaningful time with your cherished loved ones. From all of us at Benson Homes, we wish you a heartfelt happy and safe holiday season!

Can You Really Practice Hospitality in COVID-19?

A Generous Heart Knows No Bounds, Here are a Few Ways to Celebrate the Holidays Safely in 2020

A Generous Heart Knows No Bounds, Here are a Few Ways to Celebrate the Holidays Safely in 2020

element5-digital-E3jZBz5lYp8-unsplash.jpg

Hospitality in the time of COVID-19?*

It seems counterintuitive, certainly. In many places around the United States, gatherings are restricted to 10 or fewer guests. So, while 2020 has brought on a slew of unexpected events to everyone in the world, it comes as no surprise that the holiday season may look a little different this year.

Of course, while large gatherings with friends, family and coworkers are strongly discouraged, you may find yourself hosting an immediate family member or two under your roof out of necessity.

Here are a few tips to keep you and your travelers safe this season:

1.     Have a Plan and Set Expectations

The CDC discourages air travel and other forms of transportation as the spread of COVID-19 continues to climb. Ensure your guests are practicing social distancing, washing their hands and following proper mask-wearing protocols.

At the end of the day, it’s your home, and you have the final say on who may spend time there.

2.     Common Area Masks – and Other Necessities

Encourage your guests to wear masks in common areas of your home. Along with basic toiletries and fresh towels, consider adding masks, hand sanitizer, and hand soap to your list of provided amenities.

3.     Individualize Hand Towels and Serving Utensils

For common area bathrooms, be sure to provide individual hand towels for guests washing their hands. In the kitchen and dining areas of the home, consider serving food to guests and avoid “family style” passing of dishes and buffet style service to avoid sharing common utensils or touching food products.

4.     Spend Time Together Outdoors

Taking a walk, building a campfire, and even creating a picnic outdoors is a great way to spend time together while practicing social distancing. If you have a card table, or outdoor patio furniture, put them to use! Try setting up a holiday themed table-scape outside, complete with no-contact lawn games.

5.     Enjoy a Common Virtual Thread

If the risk is too high or it’s simply not possible to spend time with loved ones this holiday season, pick a few traditions to celebrate virtually. Read a book together, light the same scented candle, create a virtual wine tasting, play a virtual game, journal, or complete a special project together.

Having a tangible task while checking in virtually will give you a physical reminder of your loved ones through the remainder of the year. This will ensure your connection goes beyond digital, and into the physical world. And who knows, maybe you’ll create a new family tradition along the way!

From your friends at Benson Homes, stay safe and enjoy the holidays!

*With numbers of cases changing rapidly in the United States, it’s best to remain informed about high-risk areas and activities. Read more about COVID-19 and official CDC Guidelines here.

Holiday Hosting Tips by Benson Homes

There’ll be parties for hosting, but is your home ready? Check out these 7 ways to make your house guest-ready for the most wonderful time of the year.

carolyn-v-B78Zumo2_OA-unsplash.jpg

’Tis the season to be hosting — but is your home ready for your holiday gathering?

With the hustle and bustle of gift purchases, cooking meals and decorating, adding visitors or overnight guests to the mix can certainly feel a little daunting. But with a few simple additions to your home, you can have it ready for guests throughout the season – and all year long, for that matter!

Here are a few additions to make your living space a little more hospitable for your guests this year:

1.     A well-lit driveway and parking area

The first step of welcoming family and friends into your home begins before they even enter it!  Make sure your address is clearly marked on the outside of your home and that your floodlights and other outside lights function properly.

Giving your guests a clear line of vision from their vehicle to your home is not only an act of hospitality, it’s looking out for their safety. While you’re at it, make sure the pathway is clear of any potential snow, ice, wet leaves or scattered toys.

ostap-senyuk-Zv6tZ5oVunE-unsplash.jpg

2.     A space for coats, bags (and shoes)

The holiday season can come with a little extra baggage. Your guests will likely flood into your entryway with coats, purses, hats, gloves, gifts, and perhaps even a food dish if you’re lucky!

amanda-vick-zw_oaDbfzyE-unsplash.jpg

Be sure to have your entry closet clean and ready to hang up your guest’s belongings so they don’t have to keep track of them throughout their stay. Additionally, try to keep it free from clutter so your guests won’t have to navigate a potential avalanche of golf clubs and beach umbrellas.

If you don’t have a coat closet, that’s okay! Just have a designated area where these items will go – a spare bedroom,  or even a coatrack will do. This will keep your party rooms clear and ready for mingling.

3.     A basket of goodies for the guest bathroom

There’s nothing worse than traveling and forgetting important toiletry items. Having contact solution, razors, shaving cream and other personal items where your guests can access them will make their transition from weary traveler to house guest much easier.

Not planning on having overnight guests this season? Keeping a small stash of necessities at the ready for your guests is vital in the powder room. A collection of hand towels and soaps is a great way to show your guests you care. Bonus points for lighting a candle to give the room some extra ambiance.

icons8-team-ZGzHKEpem88-unsplash.jpg

4.     Fresh flowers and greenery

If you have a fresh Christmas tree, take trimmings from the boughs and run them along a countertop or banister with a small set of twinkle lights, ornaments, or both! If you live in a rural area, or a space where there are fresh greens nearby, don’t be shy! Grab a few branches and see how they bring new life, quite literally, into any room.

A small vase of fresh flowers in the guest bedroom along with a few bits of reading materials will go a long way for your guests, too.

5.     Seasonal throw pillows and blankets

Not only will these items give your home a more cozy and relaxed feel, they’ll also provide ample comfort for your guests. Consider holiday or winter-themed pillow covers to give your living areas and bedrooms a fresh and festive new look!

615B0C96-DDD4-4261-857D-F6A0B02AF7FE.JPG

6.     A charging station

Having an extra cell phone charger in the guest room (for overnight guests) or the living room (for parties) is a simple way to give your home a more welcoming atmosphere. This gesture shows you care about your guest’s wellness – both inside and outside your home.

steve-johnson-f-gxmsZlj9c-unsplash.jpg

 7.     A well-stocked fridge

Having enough food and beverages – especially for overnight guests – is key when hosting any time of year. Prior to your guests’ arrival, inquire if there are any dietary restrictions or must-haves and have an ample supply close at hand!

Consider marking items that are “up for grabs” for your guests or writing out instructions for popular items (like the coffee machine) if you suspect your guests are on a different sleeping or eating schedule.

Adding these items, along with a genuine, welcoming spirit will ensure everyone you receive into your home this year will feel welcome.

How To Prepare To Make Your Remodeling Selections

arrangement-color-colors-159045-3.jpg

Congratulations! You’ve made the decision to remodel your home and bring your dream space to life. One of the early steps during the design phase of your remodel will be making your selections.  Many clients find this to be a very fun and exciting part of the journey, and we do too! The selections are all the materials, fixtures, finishes, appliances, and paint colors that will be used to craft your remodel. These are the details that put your unique thumbprint on the space and create your signature style.

Together, with our design team, you will explore the look and feel that you want for your new spaces, working with you every step of the way to provide suggestions and guidance on the choices that lend themselves best to both your functional and aesthetic preferences.  As we consider the options, you will begin to visualize your new space coming to life. Once your selections are complete, we transform your design sketches into 3D readings that give you a virtual view of your home including those selections!

Before your design meetings begin, you can get a jump-start on discovering your preferences by doing a little brainstorming on your own.  These activities can be lots of fun and completing them will make you feel very prepared and excited to start making your selections.

Find your inspiration.

There are many places to go to find inspiration and we encourage you to check out as many as you wish.

Our first suggestion is to look online at sites like HouzzPinterest, and Instagram.  All three allow you to save your favorite photos; on Houzz you create an Idea book, on Pinterest a Board, and on Instagram you simply click on a heart icon to save a photo you like.  You can also visit Transformations on our website for ideas.  Simply show these to our design team to get things off to a great start.

Another option is to pick up home and decorating magazines and tear out or earmark pages that inspire you. You can even use a post-it to note what it is about the particular room that you love.  That way, specific selections can be highlighted when working with our design team.

Lastly, we encourage you to find inspiration in your travels and every day life. Perhaps you have a beloved vacation spot where you stayed in an amazing hotel or Airbnb and absolutely fell in love with the bathroom, a tile floor, or light fixture.  Extend that idea to a favorite local restaurant, retail store, or coffee house.  Inspiration can be found all around us! Snap a photo or two or bookmark their website to show to our team.

Make a Wish List or Must Have List

Many of our clients go into their design meetings with ideas about specific selections that they want to include.  This can be anything from hardwood flooring to a double vanity sink.  Compile a list of your own and identify if they are functional or style (or both) necessities.

Email your list to our design team. They will discuss each item with you, including the care and maintenance required and the pros and cons of specific material. In some cases, we may have other suggestions that you haven’t even considered and may like even better, so keep an open mind.  We often work with clients who decide to splurge on a must-have material or fixture and balance things out with a more budget-friendly option in another area.  The end goal is to collaborate and find the best options that will bring your vision to life.

We look forward to working with you on making your selections and creating your dream home. As your remodeling journey continues, the next step will be unveiling your design and selections when we transform your plans into 3D renderings

A Guide To Setting Your Remodeling Budget

1554140036536.jpg

Remodeling your home is one of the most rewarding investments you can make! Whether you just purchased a house or you’ve been in the same one for decades, you may find yourself considering renovations to make it more suitable for your family. Setting a budget for your remodel is a practical first step. To make this process a little easier, consider the following:

1.    Your funding options. Consult your financial institution or mortgage broker for your options and advice. Some of the options could include:

a.    Cash Savings: Perhaps you have been saving for your remodel for years and prefer to use cash savings.

b.   Cash-out Refinance: If you have equity in your home, you can do a cash-out refinance, which is refinancing your home to cover the existing mortgage balance and utilizing your equity to add in additional funds to cover your remodel.

c.    Equity Line of Credit: A home equity line of credit allows you to draw funds as needed, up to a maximum based on the amount of equity you have available in your home.

d.   Equity Loan: A home equity loan is a lump sum loan based again on the amount of equity available in your home. This is often referred to as a second mortgage.

2.    Your motivations. Make a list of the goals you hope to achieve by renovating your home. This may include things like: expanding your living space for entertaining, opening up a closed floor plan for better flow, preparing for aging in place, or creating a master suite that doubles as a private oasis.

3.    Your home as an investment. Some people go on vacation, take “stay-cations”, or do both. When you go on vacation you don’t look to see what investment every penny you spend will get you. It’s about the experience and the life-long memories created. It’s the same when considering how much money to put in your home. Don’t just consider how long you’ll be in your home and your neighborhood’s worth. Think of the quality of life you’ll get out of it and the memories you’ll make with friends and family. It’s the “I love this space so much” feeling. It’s the “Wow, I am excited to have friends over now” feeling. You’re in your home everyday and you should love it.

4.    Your wish list items. When you think of your dream space, what are the elements that you feel are must-haves or necessities? These would include things that you find critical to the design such as double vanities, white kitchen cabinets, hardwood flooring, or a bay window.

5.    Your Experience. It can be tempting to go with the cheapest contractor available but be careful to not compromise quality in order to save a few bucks. Remodeling your home is an investment, and investing in a reputable company who will produce the results you want, while creating an enjoyable experience, is priceless. Ben Franklin’s saying, “The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten” rings true for remodeling.

Benson Homes is one of Coastal Virginia’s premier design-build firms, specializing in residential remodeling and additions. Our business isn’t just about remodeling homes; it’s about creating an exceptional remodeling experience for each and every client. Are you ready to love your home again? We’d love to talk!

Prepare For Your Remodel With These Five Steps

AdobeStock_79480744.jpg

The journey to creating your dream home is an exciting and liberating experience! From design consultations and material selections, to the unveiling of your 3D renderings and the start of construction, the process of seeing your dream project come to life is unforgettable. But before your project crew shows up, you will want to spend some time getting your home and family ready for a smooth transition.

HERE ARE FIVE STEPS TO HELP YOU PREPARE FOR YOUR REMODEL:

1.     Clean out all rooms and hallways that are being remodeled. Remove furniture, artwork from walls, and any other belongings. We recommend removing items hanging on walls in common traffic areas and walls adjacent to those involved in your remodel project as well. Store these items in an unaffected area of your home or in a storage unit temporarily.

2.     Designate alternate areas for family activities. Identify new locations for activities that typically take place in the room(s) you are remodeling. This will minimize the disruption to your daily routine. Relocate any necessities to the new temporary spaces, such as computers, televisions, homework tables, etc.

3.    Clear your driveway and make room in your garage for deliveries. Remove stationary items from your driveway such as basketball nets, trash receptacles, or storage containers. Ask your remodeler if access to your garage would be helpful for delivering and storing materials. They should be able to provide you with a schedule of deliveries.

4.    Prepare your pets. Pets tend to be more prone to disruption of their regular routine than people. That’s why it’s important to get your pets set up with a place for them to relax and eat that is away from any construction areas. Start this new routine a few days before the remodeling starts to allow them some time to adjust. Be sure to let the crew know how many pets you have and where they are within your home.

5.    Kitchen & Bath Prep. If you are remodeling a kitchen or bathroom we recommend the following:

a.    Pack cabinets one by one and label the contents of each box. This will make unpacking so much easier.

b.   Compile essentials and relocate them to your alternate eating space or bathroom.

c.    Purchase disposable items such as plates, bowls, cups, plastic utensils, and paper towels.

d.   Move your refrigerator and microwave to the garage, basement or other appropriate spot where you can have easy access. Consider purchasing a hot plate.

e.    Prepare and freeze meals ahead of time.

We hope that these tips will make the transition into construction easy for you and your family. At Benson Homes, we provide you with a detailed project schedule and have weekly on-site meetings to discuss your project’s progress. It’s our goal to make the remodeling process as stress-free as possible for you and your family!

What Do Reputable Remodelers Have In Common?

Making the decision to start the remodeling journey is an exciting one. Whether it’s a kitchen remodel or a home addition, selecting the right company to remodel your home can be a little overwhelming.  How do you navigate the sea of options? It’s important to do a little research to learn more about each of the remodeling firms you are considering. There are a few key attributes that reputable remodeling firms will have in common.

Longevity in the market.  Remodelers who have around for decades have perfected their craft over the years. They have had time to develop processes that focus simultaneously on building an exceptional project while delivering a satisfying remodeling experience. When you speak with the remodelers you are considering, ask them about their process and listen to see if their response includes not only the end product, but your experience as well.

They have a strong repeat client base. If a firm can tell you that many of their clients have hired them to complete a second, third, or fourth project this is very good sign. This indicates that the firm works hard to establish and maintain relationships with their clients that are built on trust, reliability, and meeting or exceeding expectations.  Some of those repeat clients would likely be happy to speak with you about the firm.

Their clients refer them new business.  If you receive a referral from a friend or family member for a product or service provider, chances are they were happy or satisfied.  When a remodeler can tell you that they get a high percentage of their work from client referrals that is another very good sign.  The referring client is entrusting the remodeling firm to provide their friend with the same level of craftsmanship and service that they received.

Positive reviews. Being able to easily find and access client reviews is a critical part of many buying decisions these days.  A reputable remodeling firm will have reviews or testimonials posted on their own website and on sites like Houzz or Google+. Take some time to read them. You will learn a lot about the firm through the client’s eyes.

Industry memberships. There are two key industry memberships in the remodeling industry: National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and National Association of Remodeling Industry (NARI).  In order to become and remain members of these organizations a firm must follow a strict code of ethics.  Both organizations offer continuing education and certification on a variety of construction and remodeling practices.

We hope this list of attributes has been helpful to you and we encourage you to use it as a guide in your research and interview process. And don’t be afraid to ask questions, a reputable remodeler will be happy to answer!
