Spring is the Air – Is Your Home Prepared?

As the seasons change and we get a little relief from the subsiding chill in the air, it’s time to evaluate the state of your home – both inside and out – to keep one of your most important assets in tip-top shape.

Here are five items on your home improvement checklist to mark off so you’ll be ready for the warmer months ahead:

Work on Your Curb Appeal

As you prep for the upcoming spring weather, it’s time to trim those hedges and prune back the trees that may have overgrown in the last few months. As the weather gets warmer, you’ll have a jump start on your gardening projects, and you’ll love the fresh look your home has as a whole from the outside.

A little elbow grease with some pruning shears and, if you need them, a sturdy pair of loppers, can make a big difference on the outside of your home.

Clean Your Gutters

Wet leaves that clump together and remain damp can cause serious issues when it comes to your rooftop’s drainage. If you’re able to DIY, grab a ladder, and remove all leaves, twigs and other debris that may have clogged your gutters over the fall and winter months. If not, gutter cleaning services typically list in the low two-hundred-dollar range for average-sized homes.

Power Wash Your Home

Experts recommend power washing your home twice a year, once as the winter months settle in, and again as spring begins to make its appearance. So, as we head into March, now is the perfect time to rid your home’s exterior of dirt buildup, especially if you live in an area that experiences frequent snow or rain.

This will preserve the integrity and the beauty of the outside of your home, and prevent damage or decay of your property over time.

Give Your Windows a Good Cleaning

The start of spring is a great time to let the sun into your home; which means it’s likely time to wipe down the interior and exterior windows. Rain or snow runoff can cause grime to accumulate, and of course, windows can get just as dirty on the interior, too.

You’ll be amazed at the difference having windows free of dust and smudges can make in the cleanliness of your home.

Time to De-Clutter

After so many of us have hunkered down in the last few months, it might be time to evaluate the extra paper, boxes, shoes, children’s toys, clothing items, kitchenware and more that give your home a sense of disarray – even if it’s clean.

A good rule of thumb? Keep a few boxes by your front door. Each time you come across an item that you’d like to toss, donate, or give to a friend, place them in a box. Over time, the rooms in your house will become less cluttered, and you’ll already have your items organized for their next location out of your home.
